What you will have at the end

A baseline record, keep-update-remove map, refreshed sources and outline, preserved unique sections, QA log and post-update monitoring plan.

Time
60–120 minutes depending on sourcing and page length.

Testing scope

What was actually exercised, and what still requires verification in your own environment.

The dry run used a synthetic dated article with three stale claims, two strong original sections and one new search subtopic. The gap map and revised outline were produced and audited in Codex. Clearscope, Surfer SEO, analytics and a live CMS were not used.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Capture the page baseline before editing

Save the current URL, title, description, canonical, headings, word-independent structure, internal links, cited sources and publication dates. Record available search and conversion signals with their date range; mark unavailable data rather than estimating it. Identify backlinks or campaigns that depend on anchors or sections. The baseline is complete when a reviewer could reconstruct the pre-update purpose and safely compare or roll back the change.

  2. Step 2: Recheck intent and the correct SEO action

Capture current result evidence and classify the dominant and secondary intents. Compare them with the existing page’s declared purpose. Use the SEO-action prompt to confirm update versus merge, redirect, split or no change. Do not rewrite an established URL into an unrelated purpose merely because a new query looks attractive. Document rejected actions and any stakeholder approval needed for structural changes.

    Tool: Surfer SEO

  3. Step 3: Build a keep-update-remove gap map

Review every major section and claim. Mark unique, useful material to keep; stale or incomplete material to update; unsupported or irrelevant material to remove; and missing questions to add. Treat coverage suggestions as research leads, not compulsory terms. Preserve first-hand examples, original methods and genuinely useful explanations unless evidence shows they no longer serve the reader. Each map row needs a reason and a destination in the revised outline.

    Tool: Clearscope

  4. Step 4: Refresh claims and sources before rewriting

Open each cited primary source and verify that it still supports the claim. Replace broken, superseded or secondary references where possible. Record old source, new source, affected passage and the reason for change. Keep historical dates when they are part of the story instead of making old evidence look current. If a claim cannot be supported, qualify or remove it. Source freshness is not a substitute for source relevance.

  5. Step 5: Revise while protecting page purpose

Build the new outline from the map and edit only after the evidence is ready. Answer the primary task early, integrate new coverage where it naturally belongs and maintain consistent terminology. Avoid padding, template-like introductions and unearned claims of completeness. Run the brief-review prompt against the revised page and compare every removed section with the baseline so useful content is not lost accidentally.

  6. Step 6: QA metadata, links and post-update monitoring

Check title, description, canonical, robots directives, headings, structured data, dates and internal links. Preview the page at mobile and desktop widths and confirm that citations and calls to action still work. After release, re-crawl the URL and annotate the change date. Monitor comparable signals long enough to avoid reacting to ordinary volatility. Record observations separately from causal conclusions and keep the baseline for rollback.

Editorial validation record

Illustrative scenario reviewed on Oct 3, 2026. This is not proof that the named third-party integrations were run.

  • OutputIllustrative scenario: keep-update-remove map

The synthetic article produced two keep decisions, three claim updates, one removed unsupported section and one new subtopic. The source-change log preserved old and new references, and the final audit confirmed the two original sections remained intact.

  • DatasetTesting limitation

The article and search evidence were synthetic. The workflow ran in Codex on 2026-10-03. No live URL, ranking, analytics, Clearscope or Surfer SEO project was changed.
