GitHub replaced premium request units (PRUs) with GitHub AI Credits across Copilot plans on June 1, 2026. It affects Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business and Enterprise users and admins. GitHub announced the change on April 27, 2026. Base plan prices did not change.
What changed
According to the GitHub Blog post of April 27, 2026, credits are consumed based on token usage (input, output and cached tokens) at the published API rates for each model. Each plan includes a monthly amount of credits.
The post lists these base prices and included credits:
- Copilot Pro: $10/month, including $10 in monthly AI Credits.
- Copilot Pro+: $39/month, including $39 in monthly AI Credits.
- Copilot Business: $19/user/month, including $19 in monthly AI Credits.
- Copilot Enterprise: $39/user/month, including $39 in monthly AI Credits.
For June, July and August 2026, the post lists promotional included usage of $30 in monthly AI Credits for Business and $70 for Enterprise. That window has now passed.
Other details from the sources
- The post says code completions and Next Edit suggestions remain included in all plans and do not consume AI Credits.
- The post says fallback experiences are no longer available. Before, users who ran out of PRUs could fall back to a lower-cost model. Now, usage is governed by available credits and admin budget controls.
- Users on annual Pro or Pro+ plans stay on premium request-based pricing until their plan expires. At expiration they move to Copilot Free, with the option to upgrade to a paid monthly plan.
- A separate GitHub changelog entry dated April 27, 2026 says Copilot code review consumes GitHub Actions minutes from June 1, 2026, on private repositories, in addition to AI Credits. Public repositories are not affected.
What this does not say
The sources above do not give a dollar cost for a typical coding session. Costs depend on the model and token use. The announcement does not state what happens to unused monthly credits at the end of a cycle. Check GitHub's billing documentation for that.
Who should check what
Admins on Business and Enterprise should review budgets and spending limits, because heavy users can now hit a credit limit. Individual users should look at which models they select, since the post ties credit use to each model's API rate.
